Britons’ getaways to Spain could be disrupted this summer as the country’s pilot union (Sepla) has announced new measures against the Spanish government.
Sepla secretary Javier Fernandez-Picazo has recently said the union would consider a nationwide strike against the government’s “abusive” interpretation of minimum service levels.
If it were to go ahead, the strike would include both Spanish and foreign carriers, such as easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com.
According to Sepla, the Spanish transport ministry has ignored 15 judgements by special tribunal Audiencia Nacional, which state that the current application of minimum service levels infringes upon workers’ right to strike.
Fernandez-Picazo has also accused the government of exacerbating industrial relations and defending airlines’ interests instead of workers’ rights.
The announcement comes as Air Europa pilots and cabin crew members are set to walk out later this month over pay and conditions. Workers will down tools on 22-23, 25-26, 29-30 May as well as 1-2 June, with union executives threatening further action over the summer.
TTG has approached the airlines involved for comment.
