The first of two three-day strikes by baggage workers at Gatwick, the first of which had been due to get under way later this week, has been called off – for the moment.
Action by the airport’s baggage security screeners over 12-14 July and 19-21 July has been postponed pending a vote on a new pay offer, the Unite union confirmed on Monday (8 July).
However, should the offer be rejected, Unite said fresh industrial action by around 100 workers employed at Gatwick by ICTS would be scheduled.
Unite regional officer Dominic Rothwell said: “As a sign of good faith, ICTS workers at Gatwick have postponed strike action while they are balloted on the new offer."
An ICTS spokesperson told TTG: "Following positive talks between Unite and ICTS on Thursday 4 July 2024, we are pleased Unite have confirmed that they will not be taking the strike action they had previously indicated.
"We hope to receive confirmation that our revised pay offer has been accepted in the coming days. In the meantime, we can reassure passengers that their travel plans will not be disrupted."
Meanwhile, strikes over the same dates by some 200 workers employed at Gatwick by Wilson James to provide special assistance services for vulnerable passengers are still due to go ahead.
"Industrial action by Wilson James workers can also be avoided, but only if the company comes forward with an improved deal," Rothwell added.
TTG has also approached Wilson James by email for comment.
