Grenada poised to unveil new underwater sculpture park

Grenada Tourism will be showcasing its newest attraction at WTM London, a second underwater sculpture park off the shores of Carriacou, sister island to Grenada. The installation, designed by world-renowned sculpture artist Jason deCaires Taylor, features an artistic fleet of 30 small boats, each helmed by a sculpture of a local child from Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The grand opening of this new “World Adrift” installation will take place between 15 and 26 October.

The boats are crafted from marine stainless steel and pH-neutral green cement. They represent paper origami boats, emphasising the fragility of the ecosystem. They are being sunk 3-5 metres deep on a barren stretch of sand and will function as artificial reefs, providing shelter for marine life and boosting aquatic diversity.

World Adrift will be accessible to both divers and snorkellers, and it builds on the success of the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, Taylor’s first installation created in 2006, which sits at a depth of 5-8 metres. This pioneering project, located off Grenada’s main island, has been recognised as one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World. Both sculpture parks serve a dual purpose: offering unique artistic experiences while aiding marine conservation.
