Holland America Line (HAL) has made its entire fleet capable of utilising shore power after installing the technology onboard Volendam.
The line began converting ships in 2006, with its four Vista-Class vessels, while its Pinnacle-Class – Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam – were all built with shore power systems installed.
The Signature-Class ships – Eurodam and Nieuw Statendam – were launched with a partial installation that has since been completed.
Shore power is used to reduce emissions and noise in port.
The power sourced from a country’s national grid means the ship can run all electrical equipment onboard without using the ship’s engines.
HAL can connect in more than 18 ports worldwide, with 25 more additional ports actively constructing shore power facilities or looking into installing the system.
HAL president Gus Antorcha said: “We have committed to reducing our carbon emission intensity 20% by 2030 from our 2019 baseline, and we’re on our way to reaching that goal through a variety of initiatives that include shore power.
“We look forward to more global ports embracing shore power capability in the future and are ready to work with them to connect."
