An increase in the number of reported bacterial infections in Cape Verde has prompted the UK Foreign Office to update its travel advice for the destination.
According to the FCDO, an uptick in the number of cases of Shigellosis – a form of dysentery – was recorded in the Santa Maria region on the island of Sal last month.
The authority advised travellers to follow the health advice issued by the country’s National Travel Health Network and Centre.
"Make sure you are observing standard food, water and personal hygiene precautions, such as washing hands," it added.
The FCDO also warns medical facilities in Cape Verde are limited, and some medicines are in short supply or unavailable.
"The largest hospitals are in Praia and Mindelo, with smaller medical facilities and clinics located throughout the country," it continued.
