Talks are ongoing over the future of Doncaster Sheffield airport, with a breakthrough deal that could lead to flights from the airport resuming reportedly on the table.
According to The Mirror newspaper, the office of South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard and Doncaster Council are "on the verge of agreeing a deal" with the airport’s owner Peel Group.
The arrangement could lead to a new lease for the site, with Doncaster Council leaning on a positive viability assessment from consultancy EY ordered earlier this year.
DSA shut last November after Peel Group said the airport was no longer financially viable, with Wizz Air’s decision to close its base there seemingly precipitating the move.
However, Doncaster Council’s cabinet committee last month resolved to back a proposal it said could see the airport reopen and become profitable within five years.
Under the South Yorkshire Airport City proposal, Peel Group would continue to own the site but lease it to the council. The council now plans to put operational responsibility for the site out to tender with a view to awarding a contract next year.
It said informal market engagement had so far seen 15 organisations express some form of interest in DSA.
Coppard told The Mirror: “Since the future of Doncaster Sheffield airport was first threatened, we’ve always said we would do whatever we could to save our airport.
"Thanks to the tireless work of people and partners across South Yorkshire it now looks like there could be light at the end of the tunnel.”
