Rishi Sunak’s decision in May to call a snap summer general election prompted nearly a third of Brits to change their summer holiday plans, new research by Travel Counsellors has revealed.
The survey of 2,000 nationally representative respondents found 16% of Brits had altered plans so they could vote in person, while a further 14% changed their holidays to be in the country for the election build-up.
The nation will head to the polls on Thursday (4 July) to vote in the first general election following a full five-year parliamentary term since 2015.
Additionally, a further 15% of respondents said they had planned their summer holidays around the European Championships and the Olympics.
Meanwhile, bookings for trips to Germany, where the Euros are being held, have more than doubled in the past month, according to Travel Counsellors.
Travel Counsellors chief executive Steve Byrne said: “Demand for summer holidays and travel remains exceptionally strong with our research indicating it remains the top spending priority for consumers, albeit this year a significant number of people are making plans around key events such as the Euros, the Olympics and the general election.”
