Birmingham airport will receive the first flight from a new offshoot of Lufthansa.
Lufthansa City Airlines will begin operations on 26 June with the first flight from Munich to the Midlands airport. The new carrier is also serving Manchester with “potential” plans for a Dublin service in 2025.
Fares are now on sale under the VL flight code, along with connecting services from Munich.
Lufthansa City Airlines, which has been established to have a lower cost base than the mainline carrier, will also operate from Frankfurt at a later date.
Lufthansa Group has ordered 40 Airbus A220s for its subsidiary with another 20 options but will initially use the bigger A320. Passengers will see little difference with the mainline operation as there will be a two-class cabin and frequent flier points will be collectable.
"Lufthansa City Airlines is contributing to the future viability of the hubs in Munich and Frankfurt,” said Jens Fehlinger, Lufthansa City Airlines managing director operations.
“We are looking forward to new modern Airbus A220 and A320neo deliveries in the coming years. For our guests and employees, we are driving forward our renewal and thus strengthening Lufthansa’s planned growth in long-haul traffic."
