A second major airport in Peru has reopened after days of anti-government protests, which have severely disrupted tourist travel in the country.
Arequipa airport, serving Peru’s second city, has now reopened, the Foreign Office has confirmed. It follows the reopening of Cusco airport, where up to 5,000 tourists were reportedly stranded in the city earlier this week.
Hundreds of people stranded in the Machu Picchu region, meanwhile, have been evacuated following a partial restoration of rail operations serving the Unesco World Heritage site and Inca Trail.
Travel around the country, though, remains challenging. The FCDO has warned travellers arriving in capital Lima that travel to some parts of Peru "may not be possible".
Ayacucho and Juliaca (Puno) airports remained closed, with the FCDO stressing: "Commercial flight operations across the country continue to be disrupted and/or limited in some instances."
Travellers continue to be advised to recheck their plans with their airline and/or tour operator prior to travel. A 30-day state of emergency is ongoing.
