Discover Malta’s best active excursions

Active adventures bring holidaymakers closer to their destination, so always ensure there’s one on the itinerary as long as your customer is able. Here are some of the best ways to get to know Malta – and to get the body moving

The sparkling azure waters surrounding the Maltese Islands are warm year round, so whichever month a client is visiting they’ll have an array of ocean adventures to choose from. Scuba diving is particularly popular, given Malta is one of the best diving spots in Europe and has more than 100 sites to explore.

Children over 10 and adults can get their Padi and BSAC here while discovering underwater treasures such as shipwrecks, caves and a variety of colourful fish. Many dives are accessible from land so visitors can hire a car or 4x4 to drive from site to site, discovering hidden depths as they go, or they can get out and about with one of the destination’s dive schools.

Those keen to keep their heads above the water can opt for kayaking around Comino’s iconic Blue Lagoon. It’s a great way to see the island from the water and is an ideal afternoon activity for families, couples and groups of friends seeking an adventure in the sunshine. Malta might not be well known for surfing but there are a handful of beautiful bays across the islands in which to take to the board too.

Meanwhile, clients in search of an extra adrenaline rush might like to try mountain biking across Malta’s rugged terrain. Miles and miles of country footpaths and off-road trails take riders past ancient sites, through quaint fishing villages and over little-explored hilltops.

Switching two wheels for four, visitors can also try quad biking on Gozo where they’ll explore caves, creeks and craggy coastlines. Rock climbing is another of the Maltese Islands’ most thrilling experiences, with more than 1,300 routes to tackle both inland and along the sea cliffs.

EXPLORE WITH THE EXPERTS

There’s a wide range of locally run tour operators with experts lying in wait to show off why there’s more to explore in Malta. Yippee, for example, guides visitors around Gozo by electric tuk tuk, telling them about the islands’ 7,000 years of fascinating history and eye-catching architecture en route to destinations inaccessible in larger vehicles. An authentic lunch is included in the tour, as is a boat trip to see the famous Blue Lagoon and more when the weather permits.

Segway tours are available in the Unesco-listed capital city of Valletta, the ancient walled city of Mdina and on the Dingli Cliffs, which gives adventurers the chance to explore beyond the urban areas with a knowledgeable guide.

But guides don’t always come in human form on Malta, as Rolling Geeks is offering electric car hire that comes complete with GPS and an audio tour that tells visitors not just where they are but what they’re seeing in the historic Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. This option is ideal for holidaymakers wanting to create their own agenda and explore at their own pace.
