Wizz Air has acquired two more daily flight slots at Luton airport, allowing the budget airline to expand its frequency on six existing routes from early May onwards.
The airline will use the slots, acquired from Vueling, to increase airlift to Wroclaw in Poland from 11 May, as well as five Romanian cities – Bacau, Craiova, Iasi, Sibiu and Timisoara – all of which are already served from Luton.
From 13 June, Wizz Air will fly to Wroclaw from Luton seven times a week. Meanwhile, Craiova in Romania will be served 11 times weekly from 11 May while flights to Sibiu will increase from five to seven per week from 16 May.
From 17 May, the airline will fly to Bacau seven times a week and to Iasi 14 times a week. Extra flights to Timisoara will commence from 19 May, with nine in total operating per week.
The expansion will see the airline increase its slot portfolio by 167,000 seats to more than 5.6 million in total for the summer season.
Wizz now flies to 75 destinations from Luton. The carrier said its successful bid for extra slots demonstrated its commitment to maintaining its base at the airport, which it opened in June 2017.
UK managing director Marion Geoffroy said: “This announcement highlights our continued commitment to Luton airport, which was our first ever base in the UK. Acquiring two additional daily slots will allow us to provide customers with even more ultra low-fare travel opportunities.”
The carrier also announced the opening of a new base at Cardiff airport last week, with nine new routes from the Welsh capital to popular short-haul sun destinations such as Spain and the Canaries, the Algarve, Cyprus, Corfu and Crete.
