Carriers flying in the eastern Mediterranean area are being warned about a potential missile strike by the US on Syria over the next 72 hours.
The European Aviation Security Agency (EASA) issued the warning to airlines as speculation mounts that US President Donald Trump may decide to launch missile attacks on Syria following the alleged use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime on Saturday.
EASA said in its statement: “Due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria with air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles within the next 72 hours, and the possibility of intermittent disruption of radio navigation equipment, due consideration needs to be taken when planning flight operations in the Eastern Mediterranean/Nicosia FIR (Flight Information Region) area.”
Aviation regulators in the UK, US, France and Germany have been advising airlines to avoid flying over Syria airspace as the civil war continues in the country.
