British Airways’ parent company IAG has been linked with a move for Portuguese legacy carrier Tap, although a deal will depend on the manner in which Tap is privatised.
As first reported by Reuters, IAG chief executive Luis Gallego said the operation “may make sense” from a strategic point of view.
“The Tap operation may make sense from a strategic point of view because of the Brazilian market, they are complementary... but we have to look at the other conditions under which it is privatised,” said Gallego on Monday (26 June).
IAG is not the only company to have its sights on the state-owned Portuguese carrier, as other airlines such as Lufthansa and Air France-KLM have also eyed the sale, which could take place as early as next month.
Separately, Gallego said IAG was considering selling a few Madrid slots to Ryanair as part of the reparations imposed by the EU Commission for the acquisition of Spanish carrier Air Europa.
