UK government officials are reportedly considering adding France to the red list amid concerns over the prevalence of the beta variant in the country, according to The Telegraph.
Citing "senior Whitehall sources", the paper said the proposal was discussed at a meeting on Wednesday (14 July) as part of the international travel review, which saw the Balearics demoted to the amber list.
The recommendation is thought to be based on analysis by the Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC).
According to The Telegraph, the number of recorded beta variant cases in France remains "well below" the peak seen in May, with the country’s overall case rates at 46.5 per 100,000.
Almost 50% of French adults have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Earlier this week, France confirmed its requirements of British visitors to prove their Covid-19 vaccination status.
