The Foreign Office has warned Brits on Mexico’s Pacific coast to be vigilant to threat posed by a tropical hurricane set to lash the region at the weekend.
According to the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Hurricane Hilary is expected to move along the west coast of Mexico on Friday (18 August), Saturday (19 August) and Sunday (20 August) before dissipating.
The NHC has also put in place a tropical storm warning for the south coast of Baja California. "We expect further warnings to be put in place as the storm approaches land," read the FCDO’s updated advice.
"Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected and there is a high risk of flooding, coastal storm surges, and mudslides."
It advised travellers to closely monitor local and international weather updates from the NHC and follow the advice of local authorities and tour operators including any evacuation orders.
By 6pm Monday (21 August), the NHC expects the storm to have reached the US, with large swells predicted to reach the Gulf of California later this weekend.
