A "deadly" category three hurricane has battered the US east coast after it made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend area on Wednesday morning (30 August).
According to the UK Foreign Office, Hurricane Idalia is bringing storm surges, heavy rain and high winds as it moves through Florida towards Georgia and South Carolina.
Coastal flooding is also expected in North Carolina on Thursday (31 August), and residents and tourists in these areas have been advised by the US National Hurricane Center (USNHC) to follow the advice of local officials.
Areas of flash, urban and moderate river flooding, with "considerable" impacts, are expected from eastern South Carolina through North Carolina on Thursday (31 August).
Florida’s State Emergency Response Team will deploy assets and search and rescue crews to all impacted areas as soon as weather conditions permit.
