The FCDO has advised UK nationals in Los Angeles to monitor local news reports as wildfires grip the city.
The advice stops short of saying Britons should not visit and the FCDO has not advised evacuation. Flights to the city from Heathrow are departing as normal.
According to the BBC, a fire in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, home to many celebrities, has spread to more than 3,000 acres. Another blaze above Altadena, near the Eaton Canyon, is growing, while 50 acres are burning in the Sylmar suburbs, where a mandatory evacuation has been ordered. In all, 30,000 inhabitants have been told to leave.
Areas of Los Angeles have been engulfed in flames by a weather pattern known as the Santa Ana winds. It occurs when high pressure over Utah and Nevada creates a strong easterly wind. This dries vegetation, making it vulnerable to wildfire that spreads rapidly.
Footage also reveals flames close to the famous Getty Villa Museum, which houses the Getty family’s art collection. The museum said it would remain closed until Monday.
